Bootle2020 will create a rural, sustainable community and generate more
than 20% of its total energy demand through local, renewable sources by 2020.

Bootle is a village in the western Lake District, Cumbria. Once a bustling market town with an impressive history dating back to the Domesday Book, Bootle has a colourful past and now an even brighter future.

The population and services have declined over the years however with a dedicated team and a little help from partners, the friendly community continues to offer essential services and a welcome to all.

Situated between the dramatic western fells and the stunning Cumbrian coastline, Bootle boasts some of the best Lake District scenery. It is conveniently located between Barrow, Ulverston and Whitehaven with less than a 20 minute train journey to Sellafield, the North West’s largest employment base. This makes Bootle a village obvious to succeed with all its endeavours…follow our progress as the story unfolds.

What is Bootle2020? What is Bootle2020?

When our village primary school, Captain Shaw’s CE, was threatened with closure back in 2007, village activists and community leaders took action. We worked alongside the Local Authorities of Copeland, Cumbria and the Lake District National Park to develop a plan for the future.

The plan took inspiration from community surveys, existing data and lots of conversations and village meetings. Following a three year period of consultation, the first Bootle Community Action Plan was launched to a packed village hall in January 2010.

Fast forward four years, we’re proud of our achievements to date and have many more ambitions for the future. Bootle2020 is our new plan, a programme of activities - a vision for Bootle parish.

We aspire to realise a sustainable community which will export more than 20% of its energy demand by local and renewable sources by 2020. We want to breathe new life into Bootle for future generations...without costing the earth.

Progress so far Progress so far

2010 The Bootle Community Action Plan was launched to a packed Village Hall.

2011 £300,000 was secured from the Homes and Communities Agency for a much needed local affordable housing development. Victory Gardens, a 14 home, 2, 3 and 4 bedroom estate will be complete in late 2014.

2012 The young people of Bootle opened their BMX track following a successful fundraising campaign, securing £40,000 from the Big Lottery’s Community Spaces.

2013 The 12.5 acres, former MoD base known locally as Wellbank secured private investment and planning permission for 46 homes, a 40 bedroom hotel with spa and conference facilities and a business innovation area. This development, with Black Combe as a stunning backdrop will provide a unique opportunity for contemporary housing in the English Lake District.

2014 has been a busy year for Bootle; Wellbank has completed an extensive land remediation and demolition phase. Bootle2020 was launched on the 21st June with exactly 2020 days until 2020 along with the launch we also celebrated the opening of Millstones, a centre for conservation and renewable energy as well as the HQ for Bootle2020!

Finally, the team expands! There are now two full time members of staff dedicated to the delivery of Bootle2020; based at Millstones; Trudy Harrison, programme leader and Sophie Entwisle programme assistant.
